About nine years ago, I embarked on a transformative journey, leaving my communications job in Colombia to pursue an Au Pair opportunity in the U.S. My primary motivation was to master the English language, but little did I know that this move would unveil a hidden passion for photography and design.
Navigating the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, I found myself at a crossroads when I secured a US visa. I am thrilled with the opportunity to remain in the US but with limited funds and no established support network, the road ahead seemed daunting. Undeterred, I actively sought out nonprofit fellowships and discovered one that opened the door to studying design, fundamentally altering the trajectory of my career.
Transitioning careers amidst language barriers was challenging, but I was persistent. Eventually results started to show. Seven years later, I can attribute my success to the invaluable support I received, particularly from inspiring women who played pivotal roles in my journey. A dedicated design coach guided me through the intricacies of entering the tech industry, offering encouragement even when connections seemed elusive. Additionally, multiple mentors in the tech field provided invaluable guidance. I am profoundly grateful.
Over time, I've not only taught UX-UI to over 200 individuals worldwide but also risen to the position of a lead product designer. I've also founded a community that encourages adults to explore and express their creativity through art.
For those contemplating a career change, it's important to recognize that fear and imposter syndrome are inherent parts of the journey. I am living proof that overcoming these challenges is possible. If I could navigate this path, so can you. Allow my experiences to serve as a guiding light, leading you towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.
Fun Fact: I was a runway model for 2 years!
